We made Lava Lamps by doing a fun science experiment using vegetable oil, water, food coloring and Alka Seltzer tablets. When adding them we first see that the water and oil do not mix. The food coloring is water soluble and mixes with the water. We learned that the water molecules are polar which means they are attracted to other water molecules. The Alka Seltzer reacts with the water to make bubbles of carbon dioxide. The bubbles attach themselves to the blobs of colored water and bring them to the top of the glass. When the bubbles pop, the blobs of colored water fall to the bottom of the glass. We had a lot of fun experimenting by adding more food coloring and more Alka Seltzer and seeing the reactions and changes.
